At The Coaching School, we believe coaching isn't a personality trait—it's a skill that can be learned, practiced, and mastered.
Every episode gives you another ingredient, another recipe, or another secret sauce you can immediately use to develop your people.
Our Coaching Ingredients are the different types of coaching every leader should know—from one-on-one coaching and group coaching to peer coaching, observational coaching, career coaching, self-coaching, and AI-assisted coaching.
Our Coaching Recipes combine those ingredients into proven, step-by-step approaches for real workplace challenges. Whether you're coaching accountability, motivation, communication, teamwork, difficult attitudes, performance improvement, emotional intelligence, or career development, we'll show you exactly how to structure the conversation.
Then we share the Secret Sauces—the small coaching techniques that create extraordinary results. You'll discover powerful questions, accountability strategies, learning projects, recognition techniques, feedback models, motivational approaches, and practical coaching habits that transform ordinary conversations into meaningful moments of growth.
Every episode is designed to be practical, actionable, and easy to apply. Our goal is simple: help leaders feel more confident coaching their employees while helping employees feel great about getting better.

Why Assessments Get Wasted
SPEAKER_00One of the most fundamental things that we have in the training and talent development industry is assessments. And there are some really good ones out there from Hogan Assessments, great company, disc assessments. We happen to work with 24x7 out of San Diego, emotional intelligence assessments. We work with MHS out of Canada, another great company, Travis Bradbury, has a great company that does some emotional intelligence assessments. Yet something's happening in the assessment world that we got to be careful of. And I think there's an opportunity here. Is when we do these assessments, often what happens is we do the assessment and then we do a debrief with a consultant or someone inside or outside our company. And then we feel like, you know what? Now we've got what we need. And that's not true. So let me give you an example. We have a client who uses Myers Briggs. Another great assessment teaches you personality types in 16 different quadrants. I happen to be an ENFJ. The fact of the matter is, someone's not walking down the hall saying, oh, here comes Tim. He's an ENFJ. Oh, there's Janet. She's an ISTJ.
Set A Clear Coaching Objective
SPEAKER_00It's too much to assimilate. So how do we really fully use assessments? Well, first of all, we have to have an objective. What's our objective? Our objective is never just to run an assessment for the sake of finding out that I happen to be in high eye on the disc or that I scored 119 on my MHS emotional intelligence assessment. Those are just assessment results. Now, if somebody wants to coach and develop me to become a future leader with empathy, and oh, by the way, I scored low in empathy, not that a low score is a bad score, I just happen to be low in empathy. And then if you look at my disk, which is a behavioral profile, and you see that I'm a high eye, I'm an influencer. How do you use those results as an apparatus to coach, to develop, to mentor, to train to the objective of me becoming a more empathetic leader? So, number one, we have to know the objective. Number two, we have to be able to define our desired results. What is the desired outcome? In my case, is it the ability to show empathy, to understand what other people are going through? Can we describe the output? So one of the things that we've done here at Progress Coaching is we've actually created a platform called Assess to Coach. Assess to Coach is A S-S-E-S-S-the number two coach.com. Assess to coach basically teaches
Define The Outcome You Want
SPEAKER_00how to turn assessments into coaching strategies and plans that address the core objective. So for example, we have a variety of assessments from readiness assessments to sales to leader to employee to employee self-coaching to group coaching to peer-to-peer coaching, where we can also use those assessments along with other third-party assessment tools like disk and EQ to craft
Turning Results Into Coaching Plans
SPEAKER_00a coaching strategy, taking all of that into account. That is going to allow us to leverage the results of assessments into well-planned, coaching framework-driven, coaching plans and strategies. And that's what's going to make the difference. And so when we think about assessments, we often think about assessments and we get the end result and we do a half-day workshop, and now we know how to communicate more effectively together because we all understand each other's disk profiles. True. Because we don't really know we have at the tip of our tongue other people's profiles. We have to be able to identify their behavioral attributes, realize how to communicate with them thoughtfully. That's where we get in trouble, everybody. And so what we've done here at Progress Coaching is built a platform that takes those assessment results and crafts a coaching strategy and plan with, I think we're up to 11 different types of outputs specific to your core objective. Nobody coaches somebody based on their disk understanding. What we do is we coach based on understanding their disk understanding and profile to achieve a core objective. In this case, in this hypothetical, coaching some to be a more empathetic leader. So if you have not had a chance, check out Cess2Coach. Run a couple of sample assessments. I think you'll be extremely pleased.
